BRVGS Is Going to Iceland in 2020!

BRVGS is organizing a week-long trip to Iceland for the summer of 2020, (likely some time between June 20th and July 4th, 2020).   Students (and parents and approved family members of students) of the BRVGS classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022 are eligible to take part in the trip.  Students, parents, teachers and BRVGS officials will travel to Iceland, where we will tour cultural sites and explore the geography of the country.  To see an example of an Iceland trip itinerary, go to: https://www.eftours.com/educational-tour/iceland

The trip will cost approximately $3900 per student, and approximately $4300 for adults.  These prices include all transportation, lodging, activities, breakfasts, dinners and trip insurance.  Additional expenses are tips (usually $10.00 per day while in the country), lunches and souvenirs. 

BRVGS students and families who are seriously interested in going on this trip should respond to the form that was sent by email to all BRVGS students in the classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022.  Please contact BRVGS Director Marc Carraway at mcarraway@brvgs.k12.va.us for any questions regarding this trip.  

BRVGS "Virtual Museum" Website Contest Under Way

BRVGS students in the 9th grade World History classes worked in teams during 1st semester to create "virtual museum" websites to highlight technological achievements of various civilizations in history.  We are inviting the public to vote for their top choices of websites produced by these hard-working students.

 Each person can cast only one vote, so voters should be clear as to which school group (Louisa/Orange, Fluvanna/Goochland, or Greene/Madison/Nelson) they plan to review and vote for.  All votes will need to be cast no later than 4:00 PM on Thursday, January 31st.  Votes will be combined with votes from BRVGS students and staff to determine the winners.  Winners of the contest will be recognized at the BRVGS field trip on Friday Feb, 1st.

BRVGS Students Win "Women In Technology" Awards

BRVGS is proud to note that two of our students have been recognized as "Rising Stars" in technology by the Virginia affiliate of the National Council For Women In Technology (NCWIT).  Mackenzie Fain of Fluvanna County and Miryam Reid of Greene County were notified of their awards this week, and have been invited to attend the NCWIT award presentations in Blacksburg in March. 

NCWIT describes its "Aspirations in Computing" program, through which these awards are issued, as "...provid(ing) technical girls and women with ongoing engagement, visibility, and encouragement for their computing-related interests and achievements from high school through college and into the workforce."  To learn more about NCWIT, please go to: https://www.ncwit.org/

BRVGS Seniors Create Podcast

Three BRVGS seniors from Louisa County High School have participated in an international podcast project called "Nevertheless," which focuses on technology, women in STEM and education.  Nevertheless, which is produced by Pearson, is described as "...a series (that) celebrates women both inside and outside of Pearson who are using technology to transform teaching and learning and improve outcomes for students."

As part of their BRVGS senior internship projects, Sophie Ashburn, Ethan LaBelle and Justin Mundie wrote and recorded a scenario about a nuclear meltdown as one scene in a 3-part podcast published this week.  Producers of the series were impresssed and appreciative of the efforts of all three of these students.

Madison BRVGS Students Host Holiday Music Night

As part of their BRVGS senior community service work, two BRVGS students at Madison County High School have organized a Holiday Music Night as a fundraiser for a family in need of assistance with medical bills.  Olivia Young and Grace Eberhardt are working to put together a fantastic community show that will feature a number of different performers from the area.

The Holiday Music Night will be held at Madison County High School on Saturday, December 15th, and will run from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.  Admission is $5.00 at the door, and additional donations will be accepted.
