At a meeting of the Blue Ridge Virtual Governor’s School (BRVGS) Joint School Board on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, the board appointed Mrs. Wanda Elliott to serve as Director of the BRVGS beginning July 1, 2022. Mrs. Elliott has served on the BRVGS’s Steering Committee for Fluvanna County High School (FCHS) from 2003 to present. Mrs. Elliott succeeds current BRVGS Director Marc Carraway, who announced his intention to retire as of June 30, 2022.
Mrs. Elliott, the daughter of Dennis Turlington and Joan Parrish, is from Chesterfield, Va., where she attended Meadowbrook High School in the gifted program. Mrs. Elliott earned a B.S. in Mathematics Education from Virginia Tech in 1987. After teaching general math through AP Calculus at North Stafford High School, and various math courses at Louisa County High School, she started teaching at Fluvanna High School in August 1997. In 2004, she completed a M.S. in Educational Leadership from Old Dominion University. Mrs. Elliott served in various administrative capacities outside the classroom, including testing administration, and as Assistant Principal at Fluvanna High.
In addition to the BRVGS Steering committee, Mrs. Elliott has had the opportunity to serve as BRVGS Senior Advisor, BRVGS Junior Class facilitator, and a BRVGS parent. Outside of work, Mrs. Elliott has been married since 1990 to her husband, Steve, who along with their three children, Ashleigh, Julianna, and Joshua, support her as she starts this new adventure. She enjoys singing, baking and jogging to balance her work life. Mrs. Elliott looks forward to joining a very strong team of educators and continuing the success of BRVGS.
