BRVGS World History Classes Travel to Washington, D.C.

“Looking at those [Auschwitz] shoes, the pain the entire Jewish culture must have felt came alive for me.” This is one student’s response following his visit to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Last week all BRVGS World History classes traveled to Washington, D.C. to see the Holocaust museum, as well as the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Another student wrote, “The Korean War really is The Forgotten War...The men that went through this war have tales to tell, and many of them go unheard.”

“The Vietnam War was one of the most controversial wars in history.  It is only suitable that the memorial for that war is controversial as well,” was a student’s response to the Vietnam Memorial wall.

Students’ photos and written reflections of their experiences can be found at: https://sites.google.com/a/brvgs.k12.va.us/wh-sem-2-13-memorials/home

Lauren Birkett, a BRVGS student and junior at Madison County HighSchool, was selected for Leadership on the Lawn, a week-long summer program at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville for high school student leaders. Participants will engage in self-discovery, team building, and community service. They will also examine ethics, decision making, and diversity, learn skills relevant to communication and goal planning, and enhance their leadership capabilities. Participants at Girls State are made aware of the civic responsibilities they must assume when they become adults, and is a week long study of Virginia Government. There are special activities and classes, such as women in government, judiciary, public speaking, public service, newspaper publishing, parliamentary procedure, activism in art, chorus, band, and athletics.
