Back To School Meetings for Parents and Students

BRVGS Parents and students are invited to attend an informational “Back To School Night” meeting for BRVGS.  This year BRVGS will hold the same meeting on two different nights, so that parents have a choice of dates and locations to attend.  The dates, time and locations of the meetings are as follows

Wednesday, September 7th at 5:30 PM, at the Best Western Zion Crossroads, at 135 Wood Ridge Terrace, Zion Crossroads, VA  22942

Thursday, September 8th at 5:30 PM at the Eugene Giuseppe Center, at 222 Main St, Stanardsville, VA 22973

The purpose of the meetings will be:

  1. To outline the year’s major activities in each BRVGS course

  2. To share information about courses and other learning opportunties available through BRVGS

  3. To provide parents with information and resources on how best to prepare their child for the demands of college and careers

  4. To collect input from parents for future planning for BRVGS

The meetings will last no more than an hour.  Light snacks will be served. No RSVP is necessary for attendance.

Please contact BRVGS Director Marc Carraway at mcarraway@brvgs.k12.va.us for any questions.  We hope to see lots of parents there, and we look forward to working with all of our parents and students in the upcoming school year!

Keep up with all the happenings at BRVGS!

We are looking forward to another great year at BRVGS!  We try to Live stream as many of the student presentations and meetings that we can.  Please keep in mind that we are always limited by bandwidth and acoustics of the space :-)

We try to post articles, pictures, and videos here and on our BRVGS Facebook page.  Please follow us and keep up with all the great experiences and learning our students and staff are participating in.

From this summer so far we have had two Freshman Orientation days that are followed by short parent meetings.  We have included those Live feed links below.  The same content was covered both days.

Southern Orientation - Best Western - July 11th

Northern Orientation - Guiesspe Center - July 20th

To China and Back - Summer Adventure for BRVGS!

It's been a couple of weeks since 21 BRVGS staff, students, and family members set foot on American soil after 8 days of traveling through China, but some are probably just getting over the jet lag now.  Participants would agree that the long flights were worth the trip, however.  Trip participants, including BRVGS students and grads from Orange, Madison and Nelson schools, packed in tons of sightseeing, learning, and experiences throughout the trip.

To see an article about the trip from the Nelson County Times, please click "Governor's School Students Embark on Journey to China", and to see pics, click on China 2016 Photos.

The journey began with arrival in Beijing, China's capital city, where students climbed the Great Wall of China, toured Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and Summer Palace, learned about China's tea traditions, and practiced Tai Chi in the Temple of Heaven Park.

Next, after a brief plane ride to the ancient city of Xi'an, travelers bicycled around the ancient city walls, toured the site of the fabled Terra Cotta Warriors, explored the city's ancient Muslim Quarter, and practiced Chinese calligraphy at an art museum.

The final leg of the trip was the ultra-modern city of Shanghai, where the group ascended to the observation deck of the Shanghai World Financial center (now the 2nd tallest buidling in Shanghai), toured the Jade Buddha Temple and Yuyuan Gardens, and got in some much-deserved shopping time.

Despite having packed so much traveling and sightseeing into such a short time, participants had a great time enjoying the sights, culture, and of course, the food of China.  BRVGS hopes to use this 1st-ever BRVGS international student trip as a starting point for more adventures in the future, so students and parents should be on the lookout for more opportunities like this to come.

New Student Orientation and Summer work for 9th and 10th grades

We at BRVGS hope that all of our students and parents are having a fantastic summer so far!  We just wanted to provide a quick reminder that the Orientation for new BRVGS 9th graders will take place on July 11th at Best Western Zion Crossroads for Fluvanna, Goochland, Louisa and Nelson, and on July 20th at the PVCC Giuseppe Center in Standardsville for Orange, Greene and Madison.

Also, we sent a letter with a link to our parent packet to parents of incoming 9th graders last month.  The packet contains a link to the World History summer work, but parents and students can also find that work by clicking on this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PnkV8IC7y0DO3KZbrCmcoJIcpmXwewT3GPruTZ5_tTc/edit?usp=sharing.

Rising 10th grade students received emails in the BRVGS accounts from their next year AP Biology teacher, with info on their summer work requirements.

Please contact BRVGS Director Marc Carraway at mcarr1@brvgs.k12.va.us with any questions on this information - and in the meantime, best wishes to all for a safe a relaxing summer!
