BRVGS Enrolling NOW for UVa Engineering Course and UVA Health Care Course

This announcement is for any BRVGS students that are planning to take either the UVA Engineering Course or the UVA Health Care Course through BRVGS.

UVA courses officially begin on August 22, but our online professors usually like to start a week or so earlier. You will be contacted as soon as the start dates are set.

There are several important things that we will need for you and your parents to do to get you registered with UVa and BRVGS for the course.  Please read this note very carefully, follow all directions, and let Kristi Bunovich (kbunovich@brvgs.k12.va.us) know of any questions.

First and most importantly, you and a parent will need to complete an online registration form for UVa. This registration needs to be completed by Monday, Aug. 7th.  Please email me to let me know once you have completed the registration so that we can keep track.  The UVa website with steps for registration and the Online "Permission to Enroll" form can be found by clicking on: http://www.scps.virginia.edu/register-for-a-class/new-student-registration

Second, please complete and return: (You will also be receiving the linked documents in the mail if you are unable to print them yourself.)

  1. UVa Community Scholar Parent Permission to Enroll

  2. BRVGS Student Info Form

  3. An unofficial copy of your high school transcript from your school’s counseling office (counselors can email transcripts directly to me).

Then please scan or send clear photos of the documents to KBunovich@brvgs.k12.va.us or mail them to

Please let us know of any questions in the meantime, and we look forward to working with you in the new school year.

Summer work available for incoming BRVGS 9th graders

We at BRVGS hope that parents and students are enjoying a fun and relaxing summer so far!  As we noted in a letter to parents earlier this spring, incoming students in the 9th grade BRVGS class for the 2017-18 school year will need to complete a summer work packet prior to the start of school.

The packet can be accessed online by clicking on BRVGS World History Summer Work Packet.  Parents can request a paper copy of the packet by contacting BRVGS Administrative Specialist Kristi Bunovich at kbunovich@brvgs.k12.va.us or at 804-787-0886.

Please contact BRVGS Director Marc Carraway at mcarr1@brvgs.k12.va.us with any questions regarding the summer work.

BRVGS Grad Has Ongoing Internship Experience!

Recent BRVGS/William Monroe HS graduate Isaac McSherry had an outstanding senior internship experience with MITRE corporation in 2016-17, beginning in summer of 2016.  MITRE corporation is "a not-for-profit company that operates multiple federally funded research and development centers... provid(ing) innovative, practical solutions for some of our nation's most critical challenges in defense and intelligence, aviation, civil systems, homeland security, the judiciary, healthcare, and cybersecurity."  McSherry's internship with MITRE has brought him to many new experiences, including hosting for MITRE during the Tech Tour in October, as well as attendance at at the CBIC Awards Gala earlier this year.

As a continuation of his internship experience with MITRE, McSherry was flown out to Camp Pendelton by MITRE at the start of this summer to help train Marines to build 3D printed drones.  McSherry (in the center of the photo, in a black t-shirt), said of the experience, "Working with the Marines was an amazing experience.  I think the build was very successful, and exploring California by myself in my downtime was really fun!"  We are grateful to MITRE for the opportunities provided to Isaac, and proud of the way that he has made the most of those opportuntities!

BRVGS to hold 1-day AP Biology Prep Camp in July

BRVGS will be holding our 1st ever 1-day AP Biology Prep Camp at the Best Western Zion Crossroads from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Tuesday, July 18th. The AP Biology Prep Camp will help students to be as prepared as possible for the upcoming AP Biology course for the 2017-18 school year.  Topics for the day will include an introduction to basic chemistry concepts, a review of statistical analysis processes used in the study of Biology, and help on any questions from the AP Bio Summer Work Packet.

There are a limited number of slots available, so parents and students are encouraged to register for the camp (if you have not already done so).  To register, please complete the form found at: tinyurl.com/APPrepCampSurvey2017

If you have already responded via the link in the summer work letter that was mailed out to parents, you do not need to do so again.

There is no cost for the day, but parents are responsible for transporting students to and from Best Western.  Students will be served a pizza lunch.  Please contact BRVGS Director Marc Carraway at mcarr1@brvgs.k12.va.us with any questions regarding the BRVGS AP Biology Prep Camp.

MCHS AP Biology Students Provide Opening Statements for Henrietta Lacks Trial

Madison County High School BRVGS 10th grade AP Biology students conducted a mock trial in the case of the Lacks Family vs John Hopkins Hospital.  They provided Opening statements for both the Prosecution and the Defense.  This was develpoed after the class had read The Immortal Life of Henretta Lacks.  The "jury" on this day sided with the defense 8-4.  How would you have voted?  Watch the video of the Opening Statements below!
