Here we are at the start of the spring 2021 semester! With so many changes due to the pandemic that is still happening in the United States, I am happy to report that your child’s BRVGS online course will proceed as usual and be fully online. I look forward to working with your child this semester and hope that they learn great things from their teacher. My goal as the BRVGS Online Learning Coordinator is to help your student be successful in their course.
You most likely have that same goal in mind, so here are some things you can do to help from home:
Communication:
Your child will "hear" me say this often in emails to them: "Ask early, ask often."
If she/he is having trouble and shares their “woes” with you, please ask them if they have asked their teacher (or me) about it.
Many times, a lack of communication is the root of the issue, and once we start talking or emailing, things can get straightened out fairly quickly.
Grading:
Each school in the “BRVGS World” uses a different online grading system, which we do not have access to.
For this reason, all of the student's grades are on their teacher’s Learning Management System.
The easiest way to access their grades is by sitting down with your child, have them log into their account, and they can show you their present grades of every assignment.
Grades in all BRVGS online courses are cumulative for the entire course. Therefore, only a final grade will be entered into the local school system (at the end of the course).
In other words, in your home school’s progress reports, the grade for this class will most likely be blank until the end of the course.
Textbooks:
Books for AP Statistics and Cybersecurity are being distributed. Students should check email regarding details. These textbooks are loaners and will need to be returned at the end of the semester.
Important Dates:
Start Date - no matter when the local high school starts classes, your child’s BRVGS online classes will start on the dates listed below. Be sure to encourage your child to check their BRVGS email regularly so they are fully aware of course happenings.
Drop Deadline - this date is the deadline to ‘drop’ a class your child no longer wishes to take. If your child drops a class, it disappears off their college transcript with no trace that they even started the class.
Withdraw Deadline - this date is the deadline to ‘withdraw’ from a class. If your child withdraws from a course, it will be noted on their college transcript with a ‘W’. Withdrawing from a course may or may not affect their financial aid in the future. Withdrawing from a course is a last-ditch effort to get out of a class they think they might fail. Students withdrawing after a college course "DROP" deadline will be responsible for any financial penalties for late withdrawal.
I hope your child enjoys the course. Please remind your student to check their BRVGS and/or UVA email regularly. Remember, I have one purpose for them - to be as successful as possible in online learning. Contact me at any point with your questions or concerns.
Kindly,
Liz Goodwin - BRVGS Online Coordinator
