BRVGS Students Take Part in Model UN

Seven BRVGS students from several different member schools took part in the Trinity Episcopal School Model United Nations Conference (TESMUNC) over the weekend of February 22nd.  Student delegates had to prepare for the conference by writing country profiles and position papers prior to the conference, and then represented different countries or organizations on committees dealing with a range of issues, including international cybersecurity, women's rights and the division of post-war Syria.

Participants enjoyed the opportunity to work with other delegates from a number of Virginia private and public schools on these important issues.  BRVGS plans to continue to participate in Model UN in the future and hopes to eventually be able to sponsor our own MUN conference.  To see pics from the conference, click on BRVGS Model UN February 2019.

Laura Grace Snow Memorial Music Festival to be Held at Goochland High School

As community service for her BRVGS senior project, Savannah Slater of Goochland High School is organizing The Laura Grace Snow Memorial Music Festival.  The Festival will take place on March 2nd from 6-9 pm in the Goochland High School Auditorium. There will be multiple musical acts ranging from individual students to organized school groups and even one or two professional artists.

There will also be concessions in the cafeteria during intermission and we will be selling t-shirts and wristbands. All of the proceeds will be going into a scholarship fund in memory of Laura Grace Snow.  Laura Grace Snow was a member of the current GHS senior class until last year when she lost a long, hard battle to Juvenile Batten Disease. She was a shining, positive light in the GHS class of 2019, and the goal of this festival and scholarship is to keep her spirit alive.  Please refer any questions about the festival to admin@brvgs.k12.va.us.

BRVGS Students Attend SPARK! Hackathon

The 4th Annual SPARK! Hackathon occurred on January 26 & 27, 2019. Four of our BRVGS students enthusiastically participated in this weekend-long event. They are Zachary Heidel (LCHS 12th), Jenna Valesquez (WMHS, 10th grade), Henry Pritchard (WMHS, 11th grade), and Tristan Montero (FCHS, 9th grade).
  • This two-day event of learning and making is open to high school students throughout the region.
  • The experience offers participants a unique opportunity to get connected to industry experts and other students who are passionate about changing the world through technology.
 Here are some highlights below:
  • Zachary Heidel (Louisa, 12th grade) - The Hackathon was an incredible experience; my group was interested, motivated, and excited about our problem statement, and we collaborated more effectively than almost any group I have been in in the past. The initial workshops were interesting and engaging, and taught me about new software and ideas that I plan to further explore in the future. Our group's challenge, improving education, was relevant and wide enough that we could create a unique solution. My group worked on creating a project-based curriculum. I coded a class-matching program in Java to match students to the classes in the curriculum that best matched their interests and skills. Overall, the energy and enthusiasm for problem solving and learning was inspiring, and I highly recommend attending the Hackathon next year.

BRVGS Seniors from Louisa participate in Career Day

On Friday, February 8th, 2019, 6 BRVGS Louisa seniors participated in Career Day at Jouett Elementary School, alongside other community businesses.  As the Jouett students rotated through tables set up in the gymnasium, our seniors presented their Senior Projects, telling the children about their internship experience and what it takes to prepare for a career in that chosen field.  Our seniors did an amazing job engaging their audience and sharing their enthusiasm for what they learned during their internship.
